MIDTOWN GREEN . ENVIRONMENTAL MAINTENANCE

Cleaning up Midtown ... One Trash Bag at a Time

Formed by Midtown Alliance in September 1998, Midtown Green Environmental Maintenance program provides daily litter control and light maintenance for the community. Brightly uniformed crews sweep the sidewalks in distinctive All Terrain Litter Vacuums or report to trouble spots to handle trash pickup, minor repairs, pressure washing, and graffiti removal. Crew members repaint bases of damaged aluminum streetlight poles and replant flowerbeds.

Midtown Green also works proactively with the City of Atlanta to have sidewalks repaired, potholes filled, damaged traffic signs replaced and illegal newspaper boxes impounded. An online reporting system makes it easy for stakeholders to bring problems to Midtown Green’s attention and hasten response to unsightly situations.

Midtown Green Translates to Environmental Public Safety
A neglected lot is not only an eyesore, it is a magnet for criminal activity. That’s why Midtown Alliance’s Colonel Wayne Mock (as Public Safety Manager, Homeland Security Coordinator, and head of Midtown Blue and Midtown Green) has shifted the focus of Midtown Green from environmental maintenance to environmental public safety.

“Pick up a bottle here, cut the grass there, trim the overgrown tree limbs and you’ve changed the look of an entire area,” Mock said. “You’ve opened it up and made it visible, and visibility is not attractive to the criminal element.” Subscribing to the “fixing broken windows” theory of community improvement, Colonel Mock proves that with Midtown Green keeping streets clean is just as important as keeping them patrolled.
